Things to Consider When Packing Your Property: Regulations and Recommendations
Do you have enough time to pack properly? Packing and unpacking is a big job and takes time. Do you have enough time to do it properly without taking vacation time from work? Make sure you have enough time off to complete your packing and unpacking. If not, we can ease that burden.
Are you packing breakable items? Packing breakable items is time consuming because extra care must be taken and more wrapping paper and padding is required. For example, dishes, glassware, and other breakables must all be properly padded and wrapped. Some items like electronics, televisions and appliance must be packed individually, sometimes in special moving boxes or wooden crates to prevent breakage. Plan for extra time on packing day to ensure all of your items are packed properly and let us know if you need help figuring out what type of box or crate is best to use for specific valuables.
Are you packing valuables? Valuable items, like fine art, have special packing needs. Some valuable items should be shipped in sturdy crates. Are you prepared to build crates for your special items? Our packing teams are trained and have the proper boxes and materials for custom crates if necessary.
Do you have enough packing materials? You will need LOTS of boxes, wrapping paper, padding materials, etc. If you are doing the move yourself, we have the boxes and supplies to make it much easier. You will need several sizes of boxes and keep in mind, you cannot put a lot of heavy material in large boxes. They will be too heavy to move and will probably tear apart. Moving boxes should be properly sized for the contents and not too heavy for one person to move. You will need strong plastic packing tape to secure the boxes and may also need padding material, styrofoam “peanuts” or bubble wrap for cushioning. Again, you will probably need more packing supplies than you think and making one trip is better than multiple trips.
Are you moving internationally? Every country has different regulations about what you can bring in. Make sure that you understand your destination’s laws and rules prior to packing. You do not want customs agents to find forbidden items in your shipment. There are also additional regulations dictating how items must be packed for international shipping.
Your Packing Responsibilities: If you decide to do the packing yourself, you will assume a major portion of the responsibility for any breakage that might occur and you must be ready to load when the moving van arrives. Failure to be ready might result in higher moving charges. In other words, all packing must be completed the evening before move day. Only the things you’ll need that last night, the next morning and immediately at your destination should be left for last-minute packing to ensure a smooth and successful move.
In addition, your packing will be expected to meet specific standards. This means complying with the principles of good packing standards as well as following the suggestions for items that should not be included in your shipment.
Prior to loading the van or truck, moving company personnel will inspect the cartons you have packed. If it is their opinion that items are improperly packed or cartons are susceptible to damage, the company may refuse to load the cartons until the questionable items are repacked.
